It’s important that the motherboard of the computer be cleaned. Dust and other dirt particles (especially cigarette smoke) can build up and cause the circuits to rust which leads to numerous problems such as computer lockups.
It’s best to use compressed air when cleaning the motherboard. Make sure to hold the compressed air in the upper right hand position, otherwise chemicals may come out of the compressed air container that could damage the motherboard.
Another way to clean the motherboard is to use a portable battery powered vacuum that can remove the dirt particles so they don’t get trapped within the case. It’s important to make sure to NOT use a electricity powered vacuum since they cause a lot of static electricity which can damage the computer. When using the vacuum it is necessary to stand a couple inches away from the motherboard and all other components to help prevent anything from being sucked inside the vacuum.
When cleaning the inside of the case, it’s important to clean the any fans (or heat sinks) since these areas contain the most dirt, dust, and hair.

If anything has spilled on the keyboard (such as coffee and other drinks), neglecting to take the proper steps necessary for cleaning can cause the keyboard to no longer function.
Below are a few ways to clean the keyboard once something has spilled on it:
If anything is spilt onto the keyboard turn off the computer (or disconnect the keyboard) immediately. To prevent what has spilled from going into the circuits, turn the keyboard upside down and shake it over an area that will be cleaned later. While the keyboard is still flipped over, a cloth should be used to clean and remove the substance that spilt; after this, the keyboard should remain upside down during the night to dry. After the keyboard is dry, the keyboard should be continued to be cleaned to get rid of what has spilled.
If the keyboard works but is sticky from the spilt liquid, try washing the keyboard in the dishwasher as a last resort.
If after doing all the above steps the keyboard does not function properly it’s time to buy a new keyboard.
